Hiking in Malaysia: Safety Tips, Local Wisdom, and Jungle Etiquette 🌿

It's been a while since our last update.

A lot has been happening in Malaysia and around the world. Recently, news reports of hikers going missing in Malaysia have reminded many of us that while our forests are beautiful and accessible, nature should never be taken for granted.

For many Malaysians, hiking and jungle trekking are more than recreational activities. They are part of school camps, university programmes, and outdoor adventures that introduce us to the country's rich natural environment.

Growing up in Malaysia, I participated in several jungle trekking activities during secondary school and pre-university. One piece of advice I still remember today was never to casually mention the names of animals while in the jungle. At the time, I simply followed the rule because that was what our instructors told us. Later, I learned that this belief exists in many parts of Malaysia and may be linked to traditional forest etiquette, respect for nature, and local folklore.

Whether you believe in such traditions or not, there is wisdom in the underlying message: enter the forest with humility.

For expatriates and visitors exploring Malaysia's trails, here are a few simple safety tips:

• Never hike alone if you are unfamiliar with the area.

• Inform someone of your route and expected return time.

• Bring sufficient water, especially in Malaysia's humid climate.

• Start early and avoid being caught on unfamiliar trails after dark.

• Wear proper footwear with good grip.

• Carry a fully charged phone and a power bank.

• Check weather conditions before setting out.

• Stay on marked trails whenever possible.

• Respect local advice, customs, and warnings.

• Do not underestimate even relatively short hikes.

Malaysia's forests are among the most beautiful in the world. They offer waterfalls, mountain views, wildlife, and a chance to experience nature that many countries can only dream of. With preparation, respect, and common sense, hiking in Malaysia can be one of the most rewarding experiences for both locals and expatriates alike.
